I tend to use my tablet only for drawing and sometimes touch input can get in my way by picking up an accidental swipe or gesture. The Touch Options and Standard Gestures both work well, but for my use case, I generally turn those settings off. I have mine set to work exclusively on my 24″ monitor, but it can easily be set to any or all of your displays. If your setup includes multiple displays, you can choose which screen you’d like to use with your Intuos Manga tablet. Mapping is by default to your main screen. Next up are pen settings, where various parameters including Tip feel, Erase pressure and even stylus buttons can be customized. This is incredibly convenient because it allows you to minimize your dependence on the keyboard for commonly used shortcuts. Under the main tab (Tablet), you can toggle the ExpressKeys to one of several presets. There are a myriad of options to choose from. Wacom’s utility installs itself in your System Preferences in Mac OS X. Don’t have a drawing package? Don’t fret: Wacom includes serial keys for downloadable versions of Manga Studio Debut 4 and Anime Studio Debut 8. Install the drivers from disc (or if you prefer, download the latest drivers from Wacom’s website) and BOOM! you’re ready to draw. (Don’t worry: Wacom bundles a few spare nibs in the box.) Installation How fast the nib wears down is dependent upon how hard you bear down on the tablet surface. The nib can also be replaced once it inevitably wears down. Like its big brother, the Intuos Manga’s stylus is cordless and does not need a battery to operate. I prefer it to the more bulky Intuos5 stylus. The overall unit is light and easy to grip.Īs for the stylus, it is svelte and easy to grip. The drawing surface of the Intuos Manga has the feel of high quality plastic. The blue cloth ribbon trim on the top of the tablet can be changed out for the included black ribbon, for further customization. Also on the top trim area is a compartment for installing the wireless module. It can also be turned off via the Wacom driver utility software. Touch input can be turned off via the toggle switch located on the top right trim of the tablet. The silver area is where stylus and touch input is received. The tablet itself has four built-in express keys (located in the black trim area) for common keyboard modifier keys (Shift, Command, Option, Control). The packaging is very similar to the Intuos5 Medium model. Upon removing the tablet, you’ll find a driver disc, instruction pamphlet and USB cord. Upon opening the box, you are greeted with the Intuos Manga tablet (bundled inside a mesh fabric) and the stylus. That comparison still holds true with the Intuos Manga. In the past, I’ve compared the unboxing experience to that of unboxing an Apple product. Wacom does an expert job with their packaging. It is designed for both left and right hand use. The device also comes with built-in multi-touch capabilities, allowing the the Intuos Manga to serve as a trackpad for touch input. The Intuos Manga handles up to 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity, which is half the value of the professional Intuos line. The Intuos Manga, which weighs less than a standard paperback book, comes with Mac and Windows drivers and connects via USB or wireless (for an additional $40). With the Intuos Manga (formerly marketed as the Bamboo line), Wacom has consolidated their professional and consumer tablets under one brand moniker. Historically, the Intuos line has always been marketed towards design professionals. I was curious to know how their consumer tablet compared to the professional Intuos models I’ve used in the past. So when I was given the chance to review the Intuos Manga line, I jumped at the chance. ![]() Over the years, I have upgraded my Wacom tablet whenever a new model has been released. Their products are incredibly well built and, with care, can last a very long time. I’ve been using Wacom products for over 15 years now and have never had a single complaint with them. Does it live up to the hype? What can you expect from a tablet that sells for under $100? I put the Intuos Manga to the test and my results with it will surprise you. With the dimensions of 8.3″ x 7.0″ x 0.4″ and a price tag of $99, the Wacom Intuos Manga represents a renewed push into the consumer digital artist space.

![]() This is where things get interesting! Manipulating values is an artistic tool often used to improve the composition of a painting. Note that values don’t have to represent the exact same tones of your subject. ![]() This is a kind of sketch which focuses on the light and dark tones in the painting. Indeed, many artists begin a piece of work by making a value study. Scrutinizing the values of your subject is a good place to start any painting. If you can faithfully reproduce the values of a subject you can produce a believable sense of three-dimensional space and light. In fact values are more important than color in your artwork! Value is an important concept to understand in art. The term “ value” is also known as tone or tonal value. Value is a fancy way of talking about the lightness or darkness in a painting, the darkest value being black, and the lightest value being white. The result produces monochromatic harmony. With a monochrome color scheme you’re guaranteed that the result will be harmonious because it’s impossible to have any conflict of color! You can’t make a mistake with just one color! The interest in this kind of painting comes from the levels of contrast created by the values you choose to paint. Sometimes, if you don’t plan the colors of your painting you can end up with an unhappy result and colors that clash with each other. You can’t get any more simple than a monochromatic color scheme. Monochrome painting shows up your technique and accentuates brush marks and water flow, so it’s great practice for improving your skills. The better your control, the better your watercolor techniques. Controlling water and control over brush strokes is a fundamental skill in watercolor art. Because of the transparency of watercolors, brush strokes, drips, and dried edges show up dramatically. Technique with monochrome paintingĪnother attribute of watercolors is that pigments flow in sometimes unpredictable ways (which in my opinion also adds to the beauty of this kind of painting). The white comes from the paper, and the artist must learn to control the strength of the paint on the brush to control lightness and darkness. In most other mediums, dark colors are achieved by adding black, and light colors by adding white. ![]() ![]() Artists like to use fancy vocabulary from time to time). This is an important watercolor technique known as glazing (Yeah… I know. The more layers of paint you lay down, the darker the appearance. A common technique among watercolor artists is to build up the tonal values (levels of darkness) by applying successive layers of washes on top of each other. To achieve a very light grey you need to apply very diluted paint. Watercolor is a transparent art medium which means the white paper surface contributes to the final color appearance. Painting in monochrome with watercolors brings focus to some of the important properties of this medium. The entire painting is executed in varying shades of a single color, ranging from dark to light. Monochromatic paintings are therefore limited to a single hue. The word monochrome originates from ancient Greek, meaning “ having one color”. Why? Because by removing the color from your work, you have to focus on the other key elements of painting: in particular tonal values and technique. Painting in monochrome is an excellent exercise for anyone beginning in watercolor. In watercolors the light values must come from the paper, and dark values can be added with successive layers of paint. Use of a single color also creates monochromatic color harmony. The artwork is limited to light and dark, which forces the artist to focus on the important tonal values of the composition. So what is monochrome painting in watercolor? Painting in monochrome means painting in only one hue. Where’s the fun in that? But what if I told you that this kind of painting is an excellent exercise for improving your watercolor skills, and a very useful tool for analysing a subject you want to paint. Painting watercolors in monochrome sounds pretty boring… Right? After all, your just painting with one single color. ![]() Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Twitter TikTok and of course Snapchat (skyrockfm). ![]() You can also email us at even more discoveries and exclusives, come and chat with the Skyrock team on social networks. The iCloud distinction is entirely arbitrary, which is why people are not satisfied with it. In the world without iCloud, they could make it scan any media that was sent across the network. Apple has currently linked it to whether you're pushing that data to iCloud, but that's an arbitrary distinction. The problem here is that this implementation really has nothing to do with cloud sync. This puts the control in the users hands (don't sync to cloud, pre-encrypt to shared cloud, or do some personal sync thing), while also setting a clear precedent of what is acceptable on users personal devices. Alternatively, people could run their own cloud sync instances (also already available in some forms). Those that want that additional security have recourse to get it. Systems or programs to encrypt locally before pushing up to a shared platform are possible and currently in use. If key escrow becomes established as a norm between cloud providers and law enforcement, then no free alternative will ever be possible. > The key escrow solution is strictly worse in any future. If you do not put data online in that situation, there is no way for them to process it without first exfiltrating it, which we already have laws and systems in place to hamper. The key escrow option is strictly worse than the current implementation, but it is also naturally constrained and the exposure is entirely user controlled. That's the difference between someone searching a large warehouse you and many others have stored belongings, and someone coming into your house and searching through your items freely as long as they're on the list.īeyond the difference in privacy that search entails fundamentally, people are very worried that the list itself is limited only by policy, and truly, the search of items on that list has full access to your private details but for the grace of those performing the search and controlling the list. One solution is limited to you actually pushing your data off your private device, the other is limited to a list of items you say you want to push off your device, but actually happens on your device. That's purely an implementation detail, and subject to change at any time. > You get to choose whether to push your data to Apple and trigger the scanning with their solution too. We should discuss this as a societal tradeoff, as you note, but we should not ignore that this was spurred by a company running out in front of what was required of it and implementing this system which many see as at the expense of their users privacy. To abstract the implementation from the primary implementer is to obfuscate some of the cause and effect here. Right now the differences are essentially per-company, since we've let our experiences be controlled almost entirely by a small subset of companies. > discuss the government/citizen tradeoffs in that light. The author even notes they were opposed to Facebook's end-to-end encryption previously, I assume because as for defaults it sets a precedent and makes it unsearchable, but I'm not sure the specific tradeoffs they weigh and points they consider since it's behind a paywall (and I'm not sure I agree). Then you get to choose whether to push your data to the third party or not, given the risks involved. That is indeed what the article does, does it not? It makes the case that storing online with a decryption key that can be used with a search warrant is probably the right trade off, and the way other companies sometimes implement this. ![]() Try, Qimage if you're looking for an inexpensive "poor man's" RIP printer utility. That makes APIs that open up storage technologies far more interesting. Should that place be in your own backyard on local servers accessible by a laptop or a mobile device? Should it be offsite in third-party-run data centers in the cloud? Most developers choose a hybrid solution. But deciding on the exact location of that place is now a relevant discussion item. Information must be accessible, usable, movable, and use automated technology to add speed. Storage is no longer just a matter of data warehousing and archiving. That’s especially so in an era in which big data and analytics influence application design. Your data, and that of your customers, is the quintessential result from the use of your software, and it’s important to enable accessibility without size and speed limits. Meanwhile, your own challenge is to securely store and access the data your own company acquires and needs to manage. The API is maintained by developers who know their own product's features and how best to use those features. If you use a published API, you don’t have to develop that expertise in-house yourself, and you can roll its capabilities into your own software-including enhancements over time. Someone else figured out how to solve a programming problem so you don’t have to do it yourself, whether the task is integrating your application with Slack or displaying NASA’s photo of the day on your website. One way to add new functionality without having to become an expert in every little thing is by using an application programming interface (API) to another product.ĪPIs let you take advantage of another developer's efforts. This is then a tripling of your data infrastructure investments and while it is a massive expense, there are no two ways about it.Software developers plan ahead to offer new capabilities to their applications efficiently and at low cost, benefiting users and the company. What this means is that if there are 20 petabytes of data indexed each day, Google will need to store as much as 60 petabytes of data. According to a paper published on the Google File System (GFS), the company duplicates each data indexed as many as three times. When we are talking about indexing several petabytes of information each day, then the threat to loss of such data is extremely real especially if you are Google and your business depends on data. ![]() Lesson: Prioritize your data and decide what to do with them – remove them, put them on cold storage or keep them in your active servers. While such contents cannot be deleted, Google puts such data in “cold storage” which are essentially cheaper servers that keep data in compressed form that makes data retrieval slower. At the same time, cached pages of an inconsequential news item from the 1990s doesn’t get accessed frequently today. Cached versions of dead web pages (that have been removed or edited) have no reason to be stored on Google servers and may be removed from its servers. There are some data that is accessed quite frequently, others not so frequently while the rest may not be relevant any longer. The first mantra when it comes to storage and retention is that not all data is made equal. The Google search engine business thrives on data and so how they store, manage and retain data is a great lesson for any technology company. Lesson: Classify your servers to perform specific data processing components. Also, it helps run these various processes in parallel and thereby further reduces the time it takes to build the final results page. The benefits from using such designated servers and structured data processing systems is two-fold – Firstly, it helps the search engine save time by reaching out to specific servers to retrieve specific components that make up the final results page. In comparison, it took the same spiders from the Data-Gathering servers nearly 1375 minutes to crawl content which did not contain sitemaps. ![]() One study found that it takes Google 14 minutes on an average to crawl content from sitemaps. Even when it comes to populating these servers, it has been found that Google tries to prioritize organized and structured content over unstructured ones. They have Index servers that contain the list of document IDs that contain the user’s query, Ad servers that manage ads on the search results pages, Data-Gathering servers that send out bots to crawl the web and even Spelling servers that help correct the typos present in a user’s search query.
